Thank you for agreeing to take part in the Since 1664 Commando Yomp. As a member of the serving Corps, your presence is greatly appreciated and brings a focus for the other participants, particularly the fact that you have given up a weekend during a manic programme. To that end, the RM Charity are funding a heavily discounted entry fee for you. They therefore ask that you engage in a little fundraising to cover that cost plus a bit more. They therefore ask you to accept a fundraising target of £250, with a stretch target of £357. This is considerably less than the average fundraising per Yomper, which is typically £1,000.
Be assured this is a tough challenge, no serving or former Bootneck has said this is easier than any of the Commando Tests, indeed it has been said more than once that “I’d rather do all four tests back to back than this again”! That said this is a Yomp, not a run, 3 mph is the speed used for planning and provision of scran, medical support and marshal checkpoints. Carry a daysack, leave a drop bag at the start and get access at every scran point (approx every 20-25 miles).
Also be aware the drop out rate from the serving Corps is at least 50%. But also rest assured that if a fat 50 year old former Bootneck managed it, so can you, as 95% of this challenge is in the head.
Directions: Abbey Gardens, next to King Alfred's Statue, Winchester, 65 The Broadway, Winchester SO23 9BE
