Thank you for agreeing to support ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and take part in the Since 1664 Commando Yomp. As a serving member or veteran of the British Army, an enthusiastic supporter, or even purely a ‘challenge event junkie’ (and why not!) your efforts are greatly appreciated by the charity and the ultimate beneficiaries. To that end, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity are funding your entry fee. They therefore ask that you engage in a little fundraising of your own, to cover the cost of your entry place plus a bit more. With this in mind, you will accept a fundraising target of £750, which is £250 below the average fundraising level per Yomper over the last five years. Note that this is a firm commitment (and can be group for a team – eg 4 in a team can share a £3000 commitment). Should you fail to achieve this target, then ABF (SW) reserve the right to claim the shortfall from you up to the full value of the ticket. (The South West Regional Office of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity will be in touch once you make your commitment to compete and supply you with branded kit.) The Yomp was originally set up as an endurance event for the Royal Marine Corps and over time has become so popular that the event is now opened up to other charities, and anyone who would like to take on the event. Be assured this is a tough challenge, no serving or former Royal Marine Commando has said this is easier than any of the Commando Tests, indeed it has been said more than once that “I’d rather do all four tests back to back than this again”! Also be aware the dropout rate is at least 50%. But rest assured, and we quote “that if a fat 50 year old former Bootneck managed it, so can you, as 95% of this challenge is you and you alone, pushing your inner spirit. Remember, this is NOT a race against other competitors and whilst it is important that you have a relative degree of fitness, it is a state of mind that will carry you along the way and to ultimately conquer the challenge!!
